Confetti: The Interviews / #6 Nel

At last we can say, “THE SHOW OPENS THIS WEEK!!” This means, also, that this week you’ll meet Nel…

1. Who are you? I’m Nel. Or, professionally, I’m Penelope Kentish.

2. What city do you live in? I live in the beautiful town of Bathurst, NSW – Australia’s oldest inland city. It was once in the running to be Australia’s capital city! You should come and visit – it’s only two hours drive from Sydney! (…I’ve never sounded more regional, have I?) Before that I lived in Melbourne for two years.

3. Besides making wonderful things with Big One Little One, what do you do? I work for local council, running arts programs for young people. I make theatre with Bathurst’s next generation of theatre makers. I cross stitch. I check Instagram. I bake. I dance in my kitchen. I’m organising a big community flash mob. Yep.

4. What is the best feeling in the world? The second best feeling is abandoning that sense of inner doubt and fear and just creating. The first best feeling is feeling creative. Seriously. I know this is all wanky but I’ve only just realised these things recently, and I’ve been doing this a long time now.

5. What gives you the most joy? The lame answer is: my partner Tom. The cool answer is: winning at board games against my partner Tom.

6. (Without giving away any secrets) how would you describe Confetti? The most fun you’ll ever have in under five minutes.

7. What are you excited about seeing at Melbourne Fringe? I’m always excited to see what other Charles Sturt University graduates are up to, but unfortunately they’re all playing at the same time as Confetti, so I’ll miss them. But you should go and see them in my place: Lady Sings It Better had its beginnings in Bathurst, and my great friend and old uni mate Emily Bennett is performing piano-accordion in Valentine Presents: Love on a G-string. See them, then tell me what they were like!!

Confetti by Big One Little One opens on Friday, September 20, at the Melbourne Fringe Hub, North Melbourne Town Hall. 7pm-9pm nightly, except for Mondays.
